Yarra Economic Development Strategy

Client: City of Yarra

Urban Enterprise prepared the City of Yarra Economic Development and Tourism Strategy 2015 to 2020.

The Strategy outlined a fresh approach to economic development in Yarra through strategically leveraging investment and employment in knowledge and creative sector industries. The Strategy was underpinned by extensive research into the spatial economic composition of the municipality and the identification of key economic clusters.

Yarra has a number of iconic retail and entertainment strips (Brunswick Street, Smith Street, Bridge Road, and Swan Street), and the strategy provides recommendations for future positioning of strips for continued prosperity and to respond to challenges of the shifting retail sector.

Urban Enterprise was subsequently engaged in 2020 to complete an update to the Strategy. The Strategy provided a clear vision and action plan for growing Yarra’s economy through supporting the existing business community, protecting and enhancing areas of competitive advantage and improving the liveability characteristics of the municipality.

The priorities for the strategy were focused around business support and recovery during and post Covid-19, and the long term sustainable growth of Yarra's knowledge and creative industries and activity centres. The Strategy was adopted by Council.
